New Year...New Learning!

Happy New Year!

Hi Parents,

We are on our way to the FSA!  This 9 weeks homework will be very important in Reading, because it will be our study guides for the FSA!  Please make sure to check over and sign your student's BLUE Comprehension sheet (sent home on Mondays and DUE on Wednesdays!)  I expect every student to complete the homework correctly and turn it in ON TIME!!

The requirements for completing homework are as follows:
1.  Annotate all questions (Box, underline, circle key words)
2.  Show evidence by underlining and numbering the text evidence that helped you answer each question.
3.  Show process of elimination (x, ?, ✓)
4.  Have a parent check over your work and SIGN on the P.S. line.

Also, after this week, your student may begin working at home on Achieve 3000 articles and activities.  For every completed article, they may record on their Principal's Reading Log.  Every 3 articles completed at home will count for 1 chapter book.  They can use their same login information that they use for iReady to get to Achieve 3000!

I'm READY for iReady!

Hi Parents,

We are moving quickly through the 2nd 9 weeks, and mid-year testing is upon us!  Students have already completed their Achieve 3000 Level Set, and many students increased up to 100-200 lexile points!  Way to go students!

This week, we will complete iReady mid-year diagnostic testing.  Please make sure your student is rested and on time to school so they can do their best!

Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, we will have our second PMA (Progress Monitoring Assessment) that will measure what we have learned in the 2nd 9 Weeks!  Please discuss with your student the importance of doing their best!

We will begin a unit this week on Poetry and Figurative Language.  We will learn the elements of poetry and how to "read" a poem by understanding deeper meanings from the author through the use of figurative language!

PLEASE make sure you are reviewing and signing the weekly Comprehension Sheet.  Your student should be:
1.  Annotating questions (Box, Underline, Circle KEY WORDS)
2.  Underlining evidence found in the text.
3.  Showing process of elimination (✓, X, ?)

***WEEKLY COMPREHENSION SHEET counts for the RAH log for that night!!!

Thank you for your support!

Second Nine Weeks News

Hi Parents,

The 2nd 9 Weeks is underway!  We are continuing our Non-fiction text study with learning about cause and effect and time sequence relationships, or connections!  We are reading about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and how some important historical figures effected American history.

A cause-effect relationship is a relationship in which one event (the cause) makes another event happen (the effect).

Student will look for the following words to show movement through time, as well as dates, or years.

We have begun new homework starting this 9 weeks.  Students will receive a blue comprehension sheet on Mondays.  You may help your child read the passage (if needed).  Please check over their work and SIGN the back of the homework to show your participation.  These will cover skills that we have already learned in class, and feel free to ask comprehension questions about the passages.  There will be a variety of fiction and non-fiction passages.  THIS COUNTS for their RAH (Read At Home) reading for the night they complete it!

Week of 9/30/19

Hi parents,

This week in Reading we are moving into non-fiction passages!  We will not only be learning lots of information, but we will learn how to determine (figure out) the main idea of a passage using key details in the text!  Here's what we are looking at:

This will be a challenging skill, but one that will help students all the way into high school and beyond!

Reminder:  All money for the "Every Drop Counts" PTA Fundraiser is due this Friday!

* A new field trip is on the horizon in November- LOOK for a permission slip to come home this week!  All money and permission slips are due by October 28th!

Progress Reports and More!

Week of 9/16

Hi parents,

Thank you to all parents who attended OPEN HOUSE!

This week, we will discuss how recounting events in a story, in the order they happened, help us better understand what we are reading.  Your student will use their knowledge of characters' traits, motivations, feelings, and actions while telling about a story.

Here are some guiding questions you can use at home when your child is reading their chapter book:
